The city of Bombay originally consisted of seven islands possessed by Portuguese. They named the main city Bom Baia, which means "Good bay". In the year 1662 the islands were gifted in dwry to King Charles II of Britain in his marriage to the Portuguese Princes Catherine of Briganza. The British then changed the name from Bom Baia to Bombay.
The British ruled the over Bombay and the rest of India for more than two centuries. During their rule they built in Bombay the largest network of Railways and many monumental buildings in the Gothic Victorian style of architecture, which makes Bombay stand apart from the other cities of India. They also left behind the British culture and the Queens language (English).
Today the city is densely populated with over 12 million people, it is the city Dreams and Opportunities, it is the city that never sleeps. Being the financial capital of India, and as the home of Bollywood, one of the largest film producing industries in the world. Bombay has attracted people from all over India who made this city their home.
The food of Bombay is inspired by cuisine from different parts of India. Apart from the Grand and High Society restaurants and eating houses, It has various"Khau Galis" (clusters of wayside stalls) in the narrow lanes of the city, serving a variety of food items for the masses.
